Classic/Antique Car Repair: transmission, chrysler transmission fluid

Question
Can you tell me what kind of transmission fluid and brand I should use in my 1965 Plymouth Fury with an automatic transmission 318-engine?

Answer
Hello Bill,

Good question as there have been many changes in transmissions over the years which affect transmission fluid. Back when the car was new, Dextron was the recommended fluid and is still OK today. However, you can replace it with it's modern equivalent, ATF+4. This fluid is recommended for all Chrysler products since 1989 but can be safely used for older transmissions too.

As far as brand, transmission fluid is considered "fungible" or similar. Therefore, there may be some minor differences between the brands based on the additive packages they use but as long as the meet the ATF+4 specification, they're all the same. Having said that, you'll find people who swear one brand is better than the rest but that's perception. My personal preference is Mobil but I know those who have had great success with Shell and Valvoline. As long as it's ATF+4 rated, get what's on sale and you'll be just fine.

Good luck with that fine MOPAR!
