Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1962 thunderbird, Carb. linkage spring locations for 62 Thunderbird

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1962 Thunderbird with 4 barrel carb 390 engine, with a manuel chock. I need a diagram showing the placements of the accelerator pedal arm return spring and throttle return spring.

ANSWER: Hello Michael,

Your best bet is to find a 1962 Thunderbird shop manual. They are available on-line either free at "oldcarmanuals.com" or ebay or a variety of other sources including the your local Thunderbird club. Media forms are electronic or in print. Either way, I'd recommend you invest in a technical source like this if you intend to do any mechanical or electrical work on the car.

Best wishes,

QUESTION: Hey BoB, kind of disappointed in your answer. I have a shop manual and there no diagram in it, did you look? Correct me if I'm wrong, what page is it on.

Answer
Hello Michael,

I do not have a shop manual for your car as I don't have the pleasure of owning one. I was merely trying to suggest alternatives not knowing your level of expertise, which is higher than the average questioner.

So, I took my own advice and went to the website of the Vintage Thunderbird Club and found several pictorial articles and posts dealing with carb spring locations. I've copied one of the better ones below but suggest you read all and question the posters, if necessary; to solve your problem. The following are the text portion--the article was copyrighted so I couldn't get the pictures but pull it up and you'll see all. I think your question will be answered here!

Best,

Bob

the accelerator linkage for 1961-63 Thunderbirds is nearly identical. One difference is the ’62 kickdown spring bracket that mounts on the left rear carb mounting stud which was changed in ’63. The set up here is concourse correct for ’63.

This is the correct accelerator linkage assembly for a 4V Bulletbird.

This shows the mounting bracket for the throttle return spring.

Note the throttle spring connected to the bracket mounted on the intake manifold.

The two screws that mount the bellcrank to the intake manifold are yellow cadmium plated. These are two of the only yellow cad fasteners on a Bulletbird. I’ve found original yellow cad screws on unmolested junkyard Birds

My guess is that the bellcrank assembly was made by a Ford subcontractor and they supplied the fasteners with the asembly and made the finish the same on all pieces.

The screws for the bracket are also unique in that they have square toothed captive lock washers; the only ones I’ve seen on a Bulletbird.
