Question
HI
I AM HAVING TROUBLE GETTING SPARK ON A DODGE DART 1969 WITH A 318 ENGINE,I HAVE REPLACED THE RESISTOR ,COIL ,CONDERSOR,DISTRIBUTOR,ROTOR BUTTON, AND STILL NOTHING,WHATS LEFT?

Answer
Hello Sterling,

It's hard to track down a cause for your problem without knowing more history as the causes for non-starting are many. I suggest you do some troubleshooting starting with the primary ignition (key to coil) for current and the secondary (distributor to plugs) for voltage.

On the primary side, check:

1) Ballast Resistor:  a white, rectangular ceramic device you should find on the firewall between the firewall wiring and the distributor. It's a common enough failure point on MOPARS that some recommend carrying a spare in the glove box!

2) Check the main wiring connector between the wiring on the firewall and inside the car. This commonly gets corroded and dirty and will ground out the current. Reassemble with dielectric grease to prevent further corrosion. This is also a common MOPAR affliction also.

3)If you've got spark all the way to the spark plugs and still no start, it'll be time to check your adjustments such as points gap, timing etc.

Hopefully, the preceding will help get your Dart back into the land of the living!!

Best of luck,

Bob
