Classic/Antique Car Repair: 56 ford 4 spd trans, ford shop, synthetic blend

Question
what type of oil must i use for this trans?
and how much oil should it take?  thanks chris

Answer
Hello Chris,

From your question, I assume you have a pickup as Ford did not have a passenger car 4 speed in 1956? Also, I assume that this is an original truck 4 speed, not one of the newer "lockup overdrive automatics"?

If we're on the same page then, the transmission should take 3-4 pints of regular, not synthetic, SAE 90 gear oil. Basically, there is a fill plug on the side of the trans, remove it and fill to a level even with the hole and replace the plug.

Again, you want old style mineral oil based fluid instead of synthetic or synthetic blend. Synthetics may be too slippery for the wider tolerances of that old transmission causing it not to shift properly.

Hope this helps. Refer to your Ford shop manual for additional in- formation on lubricants and servicing.

Thankas,

Bob
