Classic/Antique Car Repair: alternator upgrade, hemmings motor news, rambler ambassador

Question
i have a 1963 rambler ambassador 990 5 door wagon with factory nash 327 big block. i want to upgrade the alternator to a 1wire 100 amp and eliminate regulator. which one would suit my needs with little or no modifying of the factory brackets. also..would like to upgrade to HEI ..(perhaps a wire kit as opposed to whole distributor)

Answer
You will need to do some bracket work no matter what unit you change to. My stock answer for “where can I find….” Is to latch on to a copy of Hemmings Motor News, the old car hobbies classified bible. There are many companies that supply parts for old cars and you will find them in Hemmings. www.hemmings.com. As far as the HEI is concerned the system is a complete distributor system and just adding the cap and wires to your existing distributor is not an option. There are several aftermarket electronic ignition conversions available and again you will find these in Hemmings.
