Classic/Antique Car Repair: 53 bentley fuel pump, electric fuel pumps, rolls royce and bentley

Question
I see the 53 has 2 fuel pumps and i would like to replace with a bolt on unit and with these newer electric fuel pumps would i still need 2 and i would mount them on the firewall

Answer
Hello Gary, you could do this IF you find a pump that will work within the same pressure range as the original so as not to overcome the needle and seat in the carburetors fuel bowls. relocating the pump above the fuel level line will require you to find a pump that will self prime, most of those will have excessive line pressure plus mounting it on the firewall could introduce undesired noise into the cabin. doing away with the original will also require cutting the British standard line fittings. I have seen this done but in my opinion it takes away from the car. the original pumps where relatively silent, built to last decades, and when in need of repair like yours is now they were designed to be rebuilt. Rolls Royce and Bentley's aim was to build completely serviceable NOT disposable cars. every other component of the car is rebuild-able even the instruments. so in summary yes you can modify with a different pump but the end result and effort is not worth it. if you look into it you will find that they are not to difficult to service yourself. or I would be happy to perform the rebuild for you. keep it original. keep it gracing our motorways. Best regards JM
