Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1946 column shift, shift levers, center shaft

Question
Hi Brad this is a question in hopes of making a conversion from column shift to floor shift. I have a 1946 chevy 3 speed synchromesh tranny with column shift. I would like to actually convert to a floor shift but I am not sure if the characteristics of a synchromesh tranny allow for that. So my question is not on the conversion itself but  would the gear shift levers on the transmission work independently of each other if need be. There is a large center shaft that i belive control neutral first and reverse. There is a smaller shaft that control second and third. In your years of expertise have you come across this question before?

Answer
This transmission originally had a vacuum assist on the shifter and the transmission is not really compatible with a floor shift kit. The larger shaft controls all gear while the smaller on operates a slide transfer mechanism internally so that the one shaft will work all gears.
