Classic/Antique Car Repair: Nash starter, bell housing, brilliant ideas

Question
I am trying to remove the starter in a 51 Nash Statesman. Flat head six. I
removed the two bolts and cables.  The starter will only back out about a 1/4
of an inch and then stops.  It is loose.  I rotated the flywheel but doesn't help.
What's wrong?

Answer
It's been a while since I've done one of these, but I don't recall anything special about removing the starter.  I also reviewed the manual - and no special procedures are called for, so I assume it is just hung up on something, probably the nose of the Bendix assembly is catching on some part of the bell housing.

I can only suggest you wiggle it around, trying all angles, and rotating it as far as you can in the hole, until you find a way to get it to come out.

If the Bendix starter drive has failed in the extended position, the pinion may be hanging up on the opening, in which case you might have to disassemble the starter in place to get it to release, but that will be a tough job.  I have no other brilliant ideas for you, sorry!
