Classic/Antique Car Repair: Convertible Top Motor, automatic transmission fluid, chevy chevelle

Question
I have a 1971 Chevy Chevelle. (convertible) The motor on for the convertible top is low on fluid. Do you know what kind of fluid I can add to the motor?

Answer
I don't know for sure, but I know how you can find out yourself.

The only two fluids used on hydraulic top systems are Dexron/Mercon (the same fluid as used in automatic transmissions) and DOT-3 brake fluid.  Generally, only much older cars used brake fluid, but the two are very easy to tell apart.  Brake fluid is clear, and smells like alcohol - you may be familiar with that smell.  Automatic transmission fluid is red, and has almost no odor.

Since your car is a 1971, I'm fairly sure it uses transmission fluid, but it wouldn't hurt for you to sniff the fill plug to see if you smell alcohol instead.
