Classic/Antique Car Repair: 66 corvette starting problems when hot, fan belt, dead battery

Question
Car starts fine. But when hot cannot restart without a boost. Sometimes if I move the shift back and forth it might start. It's an automatic. Thanks.

Answer
Hi Al:
I may need a little more information, but check the following items and get back to me.

1. Check the fan belt for looseness. If the generator is not charging your battery, this could be the reason for needing a boost when she is hot.

2. The gear shift you mentioned sounds a little strange. A car won't start unless the gear selector is in Park or Neutral. If the selector is off, or the selector safety switch is not registering Park or Neutral, then you won't get anything. No clicking, or dragging or nothing. But if you are getting some response for the starter, then its not the gear selector.

3. Another possible issue is, many times when a starter is going bad, the brushes inside will arc, which will cause the starter to either click like a dead battery or drag like a run down battery. Once the starter cools off, the brushes expand and work again. However, if you can put a boost on her immediately while she is still hot and start her, it not that.

Which of the three above best describes your problem? Thanks.
