Classic/Antique Car Repair: Rear oil seal on 31 Model A, drip pans, oil seal

Question
What is the best way to replace the 2 part oil seal on my Model A/ I have to do this on the ground, no lift.

Answer
If it is the original seal, you drop the pan and put in the oil soaked "rope" seal and cut it to fit.  I'll check my book and send you an update if I find any thing else.  Get the mechanice handbook and it will tell you how to fix almost everything on the A.  About $35 and you can get it from MARC. or other sources.  All of our club members have it.  Get the red one, none else.  It was Les andrew's first and it is a good A Bible.  Join an A club near you and they can help.  That way you will have more fun with that car.  Be sure to soak the rope seal in oil overnight.  And don't cut it too short where it meets the oil pan.  I don't know where the second part of yoou seal is.  I have never had to change any other part.  All rear mains leak.  It it ain't leaken, then something needs fillen.  That's what we all say.  Now if it is pouring out, then you do have to get into it.  We all have put drip pans on our cars to chtch the drippings.  If it is just a little, then forget about it.
Join the club and get that book.
Good luck, and let me know what happens.  Jack
