Classic/Antique Car Repair: power steering, steering wheel, mustang

Question
hello! I'm restoring a 1965 mustang and i just had the power steering pump rebuilt and i just installed it. when I turn the steering wheel the pump makes a screeching noise. do you know what it is? what do I do? please help!

Answer
Hi Ian:
Do you hear the screeching noise when you turn the wheel slightly or just when you turn the wheel very hard? In either case, it means the power steering belt is too loose and slipping. When turning the wheel to its maximum, this is usually considered ok, but if this is happening when the wheel is turned slightly, you need to tighten the belt as it is slipping.
