Auto Glass: window moves slow, salvage yard, glass run

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1989 caprice w/power windows the two back windows move slow and the front driver doesn't move at all also the front passenger door has been replaced with a manual door.  what do i do about the windows and what can i do about the front passenger door?

ANSWER: Hi Phil,

Let's take this one section at a time.

1.  Rear doors:  even when this vehicle was new the movement of these windows was somewhat slow compared to what you might see on a newer vehicle.  Liberal use of a spray silicone (no other lubricant is acceptable) in the glass run channels where the outside edges of the glass slide up and down in the door might produce enough improvement to be acceptable.  If not, remove the door panels and use spray silicone to lubricate the glass run channels inside the door and also lubricate the plastic "regulator tape".

2.  Driver door:  I suspect that you probably need a new window motor.  You can obtain a new motor at most autoparts stores, but installation is not a simple task.  Motor replacement is too lengthy a process to explain in this email, but if you think you have the skill, experience and tools to tackle it, I'll be happy to offer some pointers.

3.  Passenger door:  it is feasible to install a power window mechanism in your "manual" door, but there are several obstacles.  First you will have to determine whether or not the wiring for that door was left intact.  Then you'll need to find a salvage yard that has a working regulator/motor, the window switch and door panel. If your lucky enough to overcome those issues you'll then be faced with an installation process that is not a simple task.  We can deal with installation once you have resolved the wiring and parts issues.

I am sorry to be so negative, but unless this vehicle is in super shape or you plan to spend a lot of money to restore it, you may be taking on more work/expense than it's worth.

Let me know how else I can help.

QUESTION: How much would you think someone would charge for all for doors, I have the door panel, intact.  How could see if wires work.  The vehile is in great shape as far the interior is concerned, as well as the motor just needs a little bodywork.

ANSWER: Hi Phil,

Let me give you an breakdown of what I would charge.  These prices reflect doing all four doors at the same time.  Please understand that I specialize in this type of repair so my prices may be a bit less expensive than the average mechanic.

1.  Rear doors:  remove door panels and lubricate glass run channels and window regulators. $30 per door

2.  Driver door: furnish and install new window motor $149.00

3.  Passenger door:  I am assuming that the window and door lock wiring was not removed when the "manual door" was installed.  I would charge $85.00 to remove the old door panel, install the power window regulator (assumes that you have furnished a salvaged unit) and install the door panel (assumes you have furnished the salvaged "power" door panel)

I am little sentimental about the 89 Caprice.  When my Dad passed away about four years ago I had no place to keep his. It was a real beauty with only 37,000 miles.  I sure hated to sell it. Your questions bring back some nice memories for me.

Good luck. Let me know if I can help with anything else.

QUESTION: So to find someone like what would i look for in the phonebook and would that with a new regultor instead of a salvaged one

Answer
Hello Again Phil,

Your Yellow Pages probably does not have a category for "Power Windows" so you should look at ads in three categories:  Auto Repair and Service, Auto Electrical Service, and Auto Glass.  Look for ads that specifically mention power window repairs.  If you don't find any ads that specifically mention power windows call a few mechanic shops, a few glass shops, and a few auto parts stores and ask them if they know of someone who does a lot of power window repairs.  You'll probably find someone who knows someone with just a few phone calls.

A new regulator for the passenger front door may not even be available from GM.  If it is available, it will be very expensive.  It may take some searching, but I think you'll find a used regulator.  If it's not in the best of shape, the mechanic you chose can easily replace the "plastic track" and the motor so you'll have a good-as-new unit in that door.
