Classic/Antique Car Repair: headlight switch removel., fuse clips, 1947 plymouth

Question
I have a 1947 plymouth and I want to know how to remove head light switch. I want to clean the connections to see if the fuse quits heating up, when switch is on. Thanks Donny

Answer
You have to reach up behind the dashboard and feel the top of the switch - there is a very small push button on the top of the switch which you have to depress, and while you are holding it down (it is spring loaded, so it will pop back up if you let it go) you have to pull out on the switch knob as if to turn it on.  The whole knob and shaft will come out in your hand.  Now you can unscrew the bezel and remove the switch. Be sure to disconnect the battery before you do this.

If the fuse is getting hot but not blowing, cleaning the contacts will probably fix it, but since you are in there anyway, replace the fuse with a new one - the problem could be a bad connection inside the fuse.  Usually, though, the dirty connection is where the fuse clips hold the fuse caps.
