Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1970 Ford F100 Truck Needs Shifter Repair, 1970 ford f100, ant bar

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1970 Ford F100 Pickup that I need the shifter repaired. The automatic transmission works great but I have to open the hood to put it in to drive/park/reverse/neutral as the column shifter will not move the lever on the transmission. In other words when I move the shifter inside the truck nothing moves under the hood. So whatever connects the shifter inside the truck (on the column) to the lever that moves it into gear on the transmission is broken somewhere inside the column. I just need to know what parts I need and where to find them and what all needs to be removed to make the repair.

Thanks in Advance!

ANSWER: The parts needed would have to be determined by a visual inspection and this can be pretty sticky. Unless you are pretty mechancally inclined, I would take this one to the shop.

The steering wheel and possibly the worm gear box can possibly be needed to be removed depending of the extent of the damage.

As for parts, junk yard.

QUESTION: Hi Tazz,

Thank you so much for your fast reply. I am very mechanically inclined and I would really like to do the repairs myself as I have done all the repairs needed on this truck since 1978. I'm a computer guy & a certified electrician and don't mind turning some nuts & bolts. I just need to know what I'm looking for. I have had the steering wheel off before while replacing the turning signal cam.

Thanks Again! :)

Answer
Ok then here we go. First determine your shifter rod is in the column and not on a side tube (obvious but looking)

Then pull wheel and column collar. (remove all related items in the way of collar...blinker plate, etc)

Then locate the rod going along side your column shaft. See if it is broke or the problem is at base of column.
Uder the hood the column kina expands for room to work. This is where is i hard. You must determine where the break is at and remove the dog ears if necessary.

You will have to do this once on your truck and once at the junk yard. Some yards only sell whole columns. I would check first and see if you are better going that route.
