Classic/Antique Car Repair: Installing turn signals in 49 ford, 49 ford, ford custom

Question
I have a 49 Ford Custom Tudor and am trying to install a turn signal kit.  Trouble is I keep blowing the fuse.  Should I be connecting the ground from the flasher to the positive wire (as the car is positive ground) or the negative wire.  Or do I just give up on signal lights and hope no one hits me trying to see what I'm pointing at when I turn.

Answer
Gary, none of the wires from the flasher goes directly to ground. The flasher is a series circuit device that connects to the ignition switch on one terminal and the other directly across from it goes to the feed for the directional switch. The third leg is the flasher indicator and goes to the single light in the add on directional handle. Inside the flasher is a thermostatic leaf spring with a contact on the end of it. When you flip the switch current flows through a wire that is wrapped around the spring. As the wire heats the spring bends and the contacts open. It cools quickly and current flows again and the process starts all over again. If you connect one side of the flasher to ground you will blow fuses quicker than you can replace them. Good luck.
