Classic/Antique Car Repair: Brake Lights on 1938 Oldsmobile, brake light switch, cable lights

Question
QUESTION: The first time I step on the brakes after I start the car, the brake lights come on and stay on.  The only way I can get them to go off is disconnect the battery cable when I stop the car. If I attach the battery cable shortly after disconnecting, the brake will come back on.  However, if it sits over night and I attach the battery cable, they wont't come back on until I step on the brake again.  Anu ideas would be appreciated as I have been unable to locate a brake light switch that attaches to the master cylinder.  Thanks.

ANSWER: This is interesting. If you just let the car sit without disconnecting the battery overnight, does the light go out also?

I am thinking it is a pressure bleed off during the night not related to the battery. Try it and let me know.

QUESTION: I'm leery of leaving it sit all night with the brake lights on.  However, I hooked up the battery and stepped on the brake and the lights went on.  I let it sit like that for an hour and the brake lights were still on.  I disconnected the positive cable, lights went out, touched it back on the post and the brake lights came back on.  Disconnected the cable again and touched it to the post a minute later and no brake lights this time!  Connected the battery again, stepped on the brake, got my lights, disconnected the cable again for a few seconds, touched the post and the brake lights came back on.  Left the cable disconnected and went back after ten minutes and hooked it back up.  No brake lights came on this time.  Hope this gives you a little more info to maybe hazard a guess as to what may be going on.  Thanks.

Answer
Sound like pressure bleed off problem to me. Were it in my shop, the next thing to check would be to jack it up and turn one wheel to see if the brake is staying applied during this time, or just the light. Be sure and check the operation of the brake. i.e. - wheel turns free, then brake applied, wheel stops, then with light on but brake not applied, does wheel turn or is brake still engaged?
