Classic/Antique Car Repair: starting noise, starter solenoid, ford mustang

Question
I own a stock 1965 ford mustang with a 289 2v with a c-4 trans. The car has been in my family since 1972, I know since then the motor or trans have never been changed. The problem is when I start the car it makes a screeching noise when cranking, but when it starts it runs great with no noise. I have replaced the starter, solenoid and cable to the two of them but it still makes the same noise. If you could give me any ideas that would be great.

Answer
bad news my friend.... it is not the starter but the flywheel...over the years the teeth have ground down to nubs..
IF?  you changed the starters yourself.. then do an inspection  take out the starter and look at the teeth they should be slightly rounded at the "top or tips" with a little flat spot on the very end. If the are chewed up and ground down theres your answer...Let me know and we will go to the next step... good luck.
Oh! a good note the parts for this car are plenty full and cheap and there are many website with full how tos for this job.
Just Google  "how to replace a flywheel on a 1964 mustang"
