Classic/Antique Car Repair: 68 corvette ignition trouble, 68 corvette, pluged

Question
Hi there, I have a 68 327 vette(orig. motor) with orig. points type ignition. I have replaced points , rotor , cap, plugs and wires, and coil. It's not firing well at low RPM, and stalls. I'v tried 2 rebuilt carbs(1 Q-jet 1 Holley) with the same result. If I pull a plug wire and let it arc at the cap the cyl will fire but stops firing when pushed into the cap. I noticed the + wire going to the coil(the white cloth covered wire) gets hot with just Ign. turned on, car not running. Same with the wire from + coil side to selonoid. Any help would be GREATLY appriciated.
    Thanks    Tim

Hi- have you replaced the condenser, and I wonder if the capasator is going bad.  is the timming right at apx. 8 or 10 and how is the carb adj. also haw is the choke is it closing up on you,and check for any open or un pluged vacume lines- do you have a p.c.v. valve if so clean it out good.
