Classic/Antique Car Repair: 64 - 69 Ford Mustang, collector car restoration, car rust

Question
Hi, Dick I'd like to know where I can lean about restoring a 64 through a 69 Mustang, as I'm in the early stages of considering a future purchase.  Any suggestions as to where I can lean more about fixing up a Mustang?  Thanks!

Answer
Two things you should do, in my opinion:

First, get a copy of Matt Joseph's book on Car Restoration - Amazon.com has it for around $20 - here's the link:
http://www.amazon.com/Collector-Car-Restoration-Bible-Professional/dp/0873499255

After you've spent some time looking through what Matt has to say (he's the best, most down to earth, hands-on writer on the subject I know of), join a local Mustang Club.  They're all over the country - just find a bunch near you, and attend some of their functions.  Just watch, listen and learn.  A large percentage of the "advice" you will get will be self serving, and much of it will also be wrong, but sooner or later you'll learn who to listen to and trust - ask that person to help you find the right car.

Mustangs are built without a frame, so be VERY careful what you buy - under-car rust is fatal, and there are some really dangerous cars out there that look nice and seem fine- but they are weakened to the point where one hard bump will have you sitting on the pavement!  I'd only buy one that has a proven history of being west of the Rockies all it's life, and even then insist on inspecting it up on a lift.

Good luck!

These are nice cars to drive, and everyone likes their looks.  Unfortunately, they are basically a Falcon with a fancy body - so they are not the most durable or safe cars on the road.
