Classic/Antique Car Repair: 68 gto key wont turn, needle nose pliers, door key

Question
I wanted to learn more about classic cars so I thought I would get a project car to work on.I noticed when the car arrived that the dash was loose.I replaced the fluids and went to turn the ignition and it wouldn't turn.I was told when I bought it that they did "get it running" a couple years ago.I think they probably hot wired it.The ignition is in the dash how should I proceed?

Answer
I suspect you have the wrong key for the ignition lock.  If you have tried the key that opens the doors, and that won't turn the ignition lock, then someone has fiddled with the locks, and you are going to need a locksmith to sort it out.

You can remove the whole ignition switch and take it to a locksmith if you wish by unscrewing the bezel that trims around the key slot, then pulling the switch back through the dash hole, and down where you can see how to disconnect the electrical connections.  Unscrewing the bezel is hard to do, and requires a special tool, but usually with a good pair of needle nose pliers, you can make do with a lot of patience and care to avoid scarring the trim.

You can then take it to a locksmith and have him make a key for it, or otherwise find out why it won't turn.  Bring him the door key as they should be keyed alike on your car.

You can also call a locksmith to make a housecall, which will avoid all the hard work on your part, but cost more money - it's your choice!
