Classic/Antique Car Repair: El Camino question.., david gardner, electrical problem

Question
Mr. Warrington:
Got a 1979 El Camino with a 350 V8.
Having an electrical problem...it won't start.
The lights come on when I open the door...put the key in the switch and try to start it....nothing.  And after that, the lights are off.  (Until I let it set for awhile...then the lights will come on again until I try to crank it again...then they'll cut off again.)
I know it COULD be a short somwewhere...and if so, it's a hassle.  (Trying to trace down where it is.)
I'm also going to check and make sure that all electrical connections are secure and tight.  And just to make sure, I'm also going to put the battery charger on it and make sure the battery is fully charged...though I'm pretty sure it's not just the battery.
OK...can you think of anything else I should check?  Any info/advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.
Warm regards, and Merry Christmas!
David Gardner

Answer
David;
HI  are you sure that you just do not have a dead battery, I would clean the batt. term. off good and charge the battery and or try to jump it with a second battery, than when its running check the out put of the alternator as it should be at least 13.5+  ok
