Classic/Antique Car Repair: MGB engine removal, rocker shaft, valve cover

Question
Thank you for your last advice.  I am restoring a 1971 MGB and have prepared the engine for removal.  Where would you suggest I hook the chain from the engine hoist.  Should I hook it to the top of the valve cover?  I am taking out both the engine and the transmission.

Answer
Hi Howard,
No, not the valve cover nuts as they are only 5/16 studs and support two of the rocker shaft towers. The studs are too long to support all that weight as the strain will be at an angle when pulling both units. If you are going to pull eng. and trans. as a unit you should acquire two "L" brackets and use two head nuts. Most mechanics prefer this method when lifting both eng. & Trans. These are 3/8 studs and can better stand the strain. One mechanic in a dealership I worked at had a flawed 5/16 stud brake and dropped an eng./trans. while removing it.
Some "Bs" came with lift brackets on top and were OK for just the engine but not for lifting both.
