Classic/Antique Car Repair: 67 Dodge Dart GT Conv. Core Support Color, fender tag, dodge dart

Question
I know you may not be sure of this but I have been told that this should be black, No matter what color the car was. Is this true? We have just started restorng this car and I would really like to make sure we do it mostly right. It wont be perfect by any means but hey would like to be close. Also do you have any idea how I would go about finding out about how this car came out of the factory with a vin only? The fender tag is missing. Your help would be most excellent. Thank you for your time.

Answer
I'm quite certain that the core support is painted a semi-gloss black.  Use Rust-O-Leum "Satin Black" - it will look exactly like it did when new.

The fender tag on my 67 Imperial is also missing, but in this case I know how it happened - I mislaid it when I took it off during restoration - I'm hoping it will turn up soon!  I doubt your car left the factory that way, but to get the info for it, I believe you can contact the Chrysler Historical Archives and purchase a copy of the build documentation for your car.  You can also probably find a build ticket stuck in the springs of the backrest of your rear seat.  Then you can make a new fender tag, or have one made.

Nice car, by the way!
