Classic/Antique Car Repair: interior roof, 1961 ford falcon, upholstery shop

Question
I have a 1961 ford falcon.  the interior cloth roof is comming apart at the seems, only in one spot.  The cloth itself is not ripped the stiching is disintegrating.  The cloth roof is in excellent condition otherwise.  Do you have any suggestions as to how I can repair the roof myself.

Answer
I'm sorry to tell you that you are in for a very frustrating experience if you try to repair this yourself.  The reason the stitching has failed is that the threads used have deteriorated to the point where the minute you try to take the headliner down to re-sew it, it is going to disintegrate in your hands, no matter how good it looks now.

I strongly advise you to take the car to an independent upholstery shop and ask them to replace the headliner.  Get a couple of bids - you can probably get it done for under $200.

You can also buy a complete replacement headliner from Acme Auto Headlining, in Long Beach CA, for around $60, and put it in yourself, but by the time you finish with the job, you will wish you had let the pros do it.

Just in case, this is the gal I deal with - they are great folks, and will be happy to help you with instructions and the correct material, already sewn and marked.
