Classic/Antique Car Repair: head light switch replacement, needle nose pliers, battery cables

Question
what is involved in replacing a headlight switch for a 1965
mustang.  I have the new part, but getting to the existing one
looks tough.  Lots of stuff in the way.  Do I just start removing
stuff to clear a path?  Thanks for the past answers earlier this
week

Answer
This is not too bad, if you are fairly able to work blind and are double jointed!

First, disconnect one of the battery cables.

Then, reach up under the dash and find the headlight switch by feel.  Then feel along the top of the switch for a tiny plunger that you can push down into the body of the switch - it is spring loaded and will pop back up if you let it go, so hold it down.   With your other hand, pull the switch knob all the way out of the dash - it should now come out in your hand.  Relax, you didn't break anything!

Now, you can get at the bezel that was hidden behind the knob.  Figure a way to unscrew it - using a really small tipped pair of needle nose pliers or whatever else you can devise to engage the slots in the bezel.

Once you have the bezel off, push the switch back into the dash, and by feel, pull it down where you can see it well enough to transfer all the wires to the appropriate terminals.  Then just retrace your steps - the job is done.
