Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1966 chevy nova, vacuum lines, chevy nova

Question
Thank you for your previous answer..I do have another question for you.. My nova is equiped with a smog pump which has been disconnected..The pump is still mounted with the alternator and power steering pump. My question is can I keep the same exhaust manifold and use plugs so I can remove the pump and all the hoses that are connected. And also will I have to seal any vacumn lines?  Thank you.. Randy

Answer
Yes, you can plug off the lines from the exhaust manifold and continue using the same manifold. You should also plug off any vacuum lines that go to the control valve on the back of the smog pump, if it has any.

The car might run better with the smog pump hooked up, however - the carburetor and ignition was designed to work with it.  If you have backfiring problems with it disconnected, you will probably have to put it back on, so don't throw anything away!

If you want to eliminate all effects of the system, you need to find a 49 state car which did not get the AIR system in 66 and rob all the ignition, carburetion and exhaust parts off it.
