Classic/Antique Car Repair: Ignition switch, needle nose pliers, bayonet type

Question
I need to remove the ignition switch bezel and ignition switch from a 1965 Pontiac GTO dashboard. Do you know the procedure to remove it?

Answer
I don't know without looking at it, but I can tell you what to look for, and then you can do it.

Look at the bezel from the passenger seat, and see if there are radial grooves on it, deep enough for a tool to engage. These can be either close in to the key slot, or around the outer periphery of the bezel.  If you don't see anything like that, then it is a  bayonet type lock (similar to a normal automotive bulb socket).

If it has the grooves, find a pair of needle nose pliers with tips that fit into the grooves, and just unscrew it, holding the ignition switch tight against the inside of the dash by reaching under the dashboard.  Be careful not to scratch the chrome of the bezel - mainly by avoiding letting your tool slip.

If the bezel does not have the grooves, reach under the dash and push the lock tight against the dashboard from, you will feel a spring pushing it back away from the dash.  While pushing it tight up against the dash, and holding the bezel with your other hand so it cannot turn in the dash, turn the whole ignition switch counterclockwise (viewed from under the dash) so as to "unscrew" it from the bezel.  It only has to go about 1/4 turn or less, then it will fall right out from the bottom of the dash.
