Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 Mustang Horn Problems, detective work, gray head

Question
I just replaced all the electronics in the steering wheel (turning signals, horn assembly, ect.) on my 1965 mustang. Now when I turn the wheel either left or right the horn honks and the turn signal lever makes a clicking sounds and is very stiff. I have adjusted the steering column and loosened/tightened the whole assembly, thinking that maybe something was either too tight or wasn't lined up right, but this did not help. Do you have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
The way the horn operates on these cars is by grounding the wire that comes up the column to the horn ring contacts, so part of your problem is that something made of metal and in contact with the column is making contact with the wire (or something the wire is connected to) and causing the horn to blow.

The stiffness and noise etc. tells us that something is in the wrong position, but without taking it all apart and analyzing where everything should be (and without another identical car to compare with), I wouldn't be able to help you.  Something didn't get put back right, or else there is an incorrect part in there - you've just got to do the detective work to figure out what isn't put together right. I'm sorry not to be more help.

If you have the parts book for this car, it will show you an exploded view of every assembly on the car - if you don't have one, and if you are going to be maintaining this car, I strongly advise you to get one!  These run on eBay all the time, or you can get one from any of the automotive literature dealers. It will be the best $70 you've ever spent!

Good Luck, and sorry I don't know the answer off the top of my fuzzy gray head!
