Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1963 Mercury Monterey fuel system, mercury monterey, older cars

Question
Hello Roger I just bought a 63 Merc Monterey, and I'm noticing the hesitation and desiling when I accelerate. I know that the car has been sitting,and I have added new fuel to help it a bit, do you know if this car came equiped with a fuel canister? or just the exterior fuel filter. Shouls I use something for the old gas to help get rid of the dieling?

I have been working on cars for about 8 years and this has been the oldest one I have taken on and a bit green about some of the fuel systems.

Thanks-Chris

HI
   Chris;
         I would drain the gas or just run it out as long as it is running, You should get a can of fuel/gas treatment and a can of dry gas and add it to the fuel, do not fill it up till you burn most of the old gas out than I would give it a full tune up - plugs and a oil change and filter as the  old oil is going to be bad , if you did not change it allready.and as far as a fuel filter most older cars had a inline filter that you could see thru. and a lot of them also had a small brass type filter in the carb. where the fuel line goes into the carb,  I would add the stuff to the gas and run all of the old  gas out than fill it up and add a can of dry gas to the new gas also than do the tune up/ a new gas filter and oil change and it should get better each time you run it. as it is full of crud and age so it will have to burn out. OK.
