Classic/Antique Car Repair: 62 T-Bird ignition removel, door locks, tag numbers

Question
We lost the keys to a 62 T-Bird & I need to know if there is a sticker or tag in the car that shows the key numbers ? If not how do I remove an ignition switch in a 62 T-Bird? Any help will be apreciated . Thanks Joe.

Answer
There are no places to find the key numbers except inside the lock, on the tumbler cartridge, and it takes a key to get that out!

Originally, the car was delivered with a tag attached to the key ring on which was recorded the key numbers.  If that has been lost, but you have the original owner's manaul, you might find that the original owner recorded the tag numbers inside the front cover or somewhere else in the manaul..

If both of those methods fail, then the easy way to get the key duplicated is to remove one of door locks, as they use the same key and are much easier to remove.

If you take it to a locksmith, he can remove the tumbler cartridge from the ignition lock and read the key code from it, but he will need to make a key to fit it first.  A skilled locksmith can do this in a few minutes, it isn't a big problem.

If you are unable to drive the car because of the lack of a key, these are amongst the easiest cars ever made to hot-wire - if you wan't directions in how to do that, ask me a follow up question.
