Classic/Antique Car Repair: carburetor question, ford f 100, aluminum paint

Question
Hi,

I have a 1954 Ford F-100 pickup that's been passed down to me through my family (my grandfather was the original owner). I'm beginning restoration and currently rebuilding the carburetor. I bought a kit from John Carpenter Reproductions. I was wondering, do I have to prime the gaskets with anything as I reassemble it, or do I install them dry?

I ask this because I remember years ago replacing the head cover gaskets on my old Mustang and rubbing them with a thin coat of oil, presumably to keep them from baking to the engine block.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

Answer
No, the gaskets are assembled dry.

The treatment I use on head gaskets is to spray them with aluminum paint, by the way - I think that is better than oil.

Good Luck with your truck.
