Dodge Repair: PCM repair 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan, dodge grand caravan, pass smog test

Question
QUESTION: History:  Van was purchased new - already converted to accommodate wheelchair.  Currently has 19783 miles since it's only driven for medical transportation.  Have had problems over the years with power windows and sliding doors not working sporadically - ABS light comes and goes - speedometer stopped working for a couple of months and mysteriously started again.  The check engine light comes and goes as well.

Problem:  The car was running fine in spite of lights - couldn't pass smog test due to error code even though emissions were fine.  Dealer states that the PCM is defective and must be replaced to the tune of $1000 for module and software. From everything I've read online, it seems that a defective PCM would actually affect whether or not the car is able to operate.  Is it possible that something else is wrong?  Of course the money is an issue but most important is the safety aspect.

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks!

#P0601 Internal Control Module Memory Check Error

Answer
A 601 is an internal PCM failure. There is a back up chip in there so it can still run. But the main chip is faulty.     U can replace the PCM for about 300 or less  already programed to your van and everything. Plug and play.  Autocomputerexchange.com
