Dodge Repair: Distributor or Timing chain?, ballast resistor, distributor shaft

Question
Hello!

1970 Dodge Coronet, 318 engine (mostly stock).  I have what I thought was an electrical problem, but now it looks mechanical.

I was driving on the highway when the engine died.  Appeared to be electrical, so I replaced the ballast resistor.  Then the coil.  Still, no spark.  Bumping the starter does not appear to turn the distributor, which really makes me worry (i have never messed deeper in the distributor than adjusting the points).  One friend advised that there might be a gear stripped at the base of the distributor shaft, while another says it's definitely the timing chain.  How do I know which way to dig to repair this?  I hope it's not the timing chain because I just replaced the radiator and water pump, but at least that seems more understandable to my experience.  Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!
