Dodge Repair: Dodge Ram 50 engine light, power transistor, dodge ram

Question
I have a 1991 Dodge ram 50. The engine light kept coming on and the pickup ran rough. I took it to a mechanic. He could not find a problem. A few days later, when I went to start the truck it made a terrible noise and quit running. I towed it to the mechanic. He said it was the timing belt. Replace the timing belt but there was no spark. He then replaced the distributor. Still no spark. He then replaced a "power Transistor" no spark still. He then replaced the computer with a used computer. He finally got spark but when he hooked the computer up the timing was way off and sounded terrible. He then put in a second used computer and had the same problem. So next he jerry rigged it so that the computer bypasses the timing on the truck and it runs rough.. but not as rough  as when the computer is hooked up. He said that he thought the problem was the computers that he was putting in. But I was not willing to shell out any more money for a problem he could not fix. He charged me 1400.00 and sent me home with a truck that runs terrible, uses gas like a RV, and the last time I tried to start it, it would hardly start. I'm a women and not at all versed in vechicles. Can you please help me find a solution to this problem.
