Dodge Repair: Dodge Dakota transmission/manifold, dodge dakota, rear seal

Question
I have a 1992 Dodge Dakota 6 cylinder automatic that my stepson was driving for about a year until he lost his license for speeding and carrying alcohol in the vehicle. This vehicle had the transmission rebuilt at a shop in Charlotte, NC 3 years ago. The week after I drove it back to Atlanta, it started leaking from the rear seal. I never had the time to drive it back to Charlotte to have them fix it under warranty and so I drove it as it was for 2 years and as long as I kept the fluid full, it would drive fine. I would have to fill it full (about a pint) about once every 2 weeks. My stepson never filled it. He ended up driving the car into a ditch because the transmission failed. I have also discovered that the car needs a manifold and/or a gasket. Do you think that running the transmission without fluid would have damaged the tranny beyond repair and are these 2 repairs so far beyond the value of the car that it may not make sense to repair it at all? The car has been sitting without any attempt to crank it in about 6 months.

Thanks for your time
