Ford Repair: Oil warning light, low oil pressure, grade fuel

Question
QUESTION: Hi Sam
The vehicle is well maintained and this has never happened before. Other lights have come on but the shop just 'cleared' them and said there was no problem-but charged me for the labor. Sheesh. Just had an oil change and inspection. The manual says something about the catalytic converter?
Could the fact that it has been parked outside in very cold weather for the first time have something to do with it?
Thanks for your thoughts.

ANSWER: Bud, can you tell the code that was cleared is?  This will help me in determining my recommendation.

QUESTION: Sam
Before I got the code checked I added STP fuel additive to a full tank of gas, and the next morning the light didnt come on and has stayed off!?
Coincidence? Since the manual says the light is about 'emmissions' I thought improving thw fuel would help. I use regular grade fuel.
If this is the case and it was the additive should I keep adding it?

ANSWER: Bud, this could be the solution, however I would recommned changing your gas cap as it also could be the issue.  As for the additive, once the code is gone, no need to continue adding it.

QUESTION: THanks I will.
One more question please since I have your attention?
Will it harm the engine to drive it until the oil warning light comes on before adding oil?
My daughter does this although  I have told her to get regular changes and check the oil often but she is absent minded and I think her generation thinks machines can tell you what they need?!
Its happened twice now( maybe more)
Its a good car a 2000 Pontiac Z28 no engine problems yet apart from regular maintenance.
Thanks again!

Answer
Bud, it is not a good idea to do that.  The engine oil light is warraning for a low oil pressure, which if it continues, it will effect the bearing surfaces of the engines which will lead to engine rebuild.  My concern would be, why does it continue to come on?  It seems that your burning oil excessivly, unless you wait beyond the 3k oil change intervals.  I would suggest that you look over the car and check for oil leaks around the engine and/or oil pan.
