Ford Repair: Gear shift indicator, shift indicator, gear indicator

Question
QUESTION: I went to get a state inspection on my vehicle in VA. I failed the inspection due to the gear indicator in my dash board. The little orange indicator is stuck all the way to the right and when I shift gears it never moves so you never know what gear your in. I know because I just feel what gear I'm in. Is there an easy fix to repair this with some kind of cable or spring I need to replace? I've been looking online for the part I need and maybe some instructions on how to install. I have a 1997 Ford E250 5.4L. Thank you for the help.

ANSWER: Hello James, There is a small cable that goes to the instrument cluster to the shifter handle. It is possible the cable is broken or could possibly be adjusted. In order to access it the trim has to be removed. Hope this helps Thanks Tony
