Ford Repair: Ford Crown Vic Emissions Equipment, ford crown vic, thermo vacuum

Question
QUESTION: Hi, I really need help figuring out which emissions controlling equipment is the most effective in a car. We recently bought a 1986 Ford Crown Vic' old cop car from someone who didn't tell us (and we're not mechanics so we didn't know) that they'd taken out ALL of the emissions controlling equipment in the car.

We found out about it a few days ago, and we can't get the car registered until we pass emissions.

It's currently at 3.7%, it needs to be at or below 1%. It can't even be 1.001%, which is completely stupid but I'm completely serious.

We don't have enough money to buy ALL NINE PARTS that the mechanic says we need, if you know which of these parts are the most efficient please answer ASAP.

I don't really know if there are any other names for these parts, some of them I can't find online with the names given, but these are the names that the mechanic who pointed out what all was missing named them as:

-EGR Diverter
-Thermo Vacuum Switches
-Air Pump
-Lines
-Vacuum Lines
-Up Stream Air Tubes
-Factory Air Cleaner
-Harnesses
- or Purge Canister

If you know which of these parts are either A: the cheapest or B: the best at controlling emissions so that we don't have to buy every single one of them, it would be REALLY helpful to us so that we don't go into debt past what we already are for this car.

Even if you could just tell us who would better answer this question would help, because we're totally lost. Every day this thing is left to fail emissions testing is another day late that we are to register it.

ANSWER: Hey there. the items you listed  off that do not even control emissions except an egr valve.  I would have the condition of the catalytic converter checked. Having a good catalytic converter will definitly help pass a drive clean test. Let me know what you find

QUESTION: We had bought brand new catalytic converters when we got the car, because it didn't have any. The mechanics say that this equipment is necessary to have proper airflow or something in the engine so that there is enough good air in the cats to actually help them fire off, because as it stands they believe there isn't enough oxygen getting to the cat cons for them TO fire.

We have two brand new catalytic converters, one for each tail pipe.

I guess, since those items aren't actually used for emissions, which of those items will make sure there's enough air going to the cats for them to fire off properly?

Thank you for replying so fast! We're rushing to get that EGR valve now to see if that helps any.

Is there anything else we can do to lower emissions? We can't afford TWO MORE cats!

Answer
Hey there, alot of these did not even have EGR valves to begin with. the catalytic converters are the main part of the emision system, without theses a car will never pass, They Do not "fire up" they have chemicals in them that change the gases from the exhaust to cleaner air that comes out of the tail pipe. And oxeygen sensor is another big item, this reads how much unburnt fuel is in the exhaust and adjusts timiing and fuel trim,
I am on vacation this weekend so reply back and i will get back to you again on monday.
