Ford Repair: Radio out, aftermarket radio, luck chris

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1998 Lincoln Navigator.  The radio went out.  I have checked the fuse under the dash and the one in the engine compartment.  Both are fine?  It illuminates with the lights, but will not turn on.  Thanks..

ANSWER: If ther radio is still on and not outputting any sound, then there is an internal problem with the radio. A new radio from the dealer is very very expensive. so i dont recomend putting in a factory radio. I would recomend installing an aftermarket radio, it will be cheaper and you will get better sound out of an aftermerket radio anyhow.
good luck

QUESTION: I should have told you... I tried that too... it is not getting power to the radio..  I tried a new one, same results...  Is there any other place a fuse could be linked besides the two mentioned?

ANSWER: hey again. thats very odd. there should be two powers though, one constant power for memory and the clock. and then there will be an ignition power that will turn the radio on in accesory and in run position. BUT if you do have both powers at the radio with the new radio. i have run into this problem as well. lots of these vehicles had a seperet amplifier for the speakers, instead of a built in amp inside the radio itself. if it does have an exteranl amp, i believe it will be located in the back of the vehicle underneith one of the panels at the 1/4 panel. they sell harnesses to bypass this amp or you can find a wirinig diagram and splice the wires yourself. that am will not put out an sound if there is an amplified signal going into it, and all aftermarket decks have a built in amoplifier. so check into this and let me know what happens. good luck

QUESTION: According to scosche, I have all of their appropriate wires connected up right.  I rechecked it...  There is no power at the radio...  I checked with a voltmeter at the harness....  It does have the amp in the back, I have also found that my rear wiper is not working either....  If you have any idea I'd appreciate it.. Merry Christmas....

Answer
hello again. IF there is no power then this is what you are going to have to trace down. both powers will come of the fuse panel, there is not much i can tell you to do but to check the wiring from the fuse panel to radio for opens shorts. the amp will have to be dealt with when you get the radio working ok. I have run into this problem a few times, You cannot!! send an amplified signal trough that amp. it will not work. let me know when you may have found something.
good luck, and merry Christmas.
