Ford Repair: 1987 ford ranger 2.9 automatic, air control valve, question pool

Question
1987 ford ranger 2.9 problem goes slow, no power, cant even get it up a hill? what should i do? it idles rough, have to set idle high or it will die out. what can i do to fix this?

Answer
Sorry for your wait. I nabbed this question out of the question pool. Start with a tune up. Plugs, wires, cap, button, and fuel filter. After that, clean the throttle body and idle air control valve. It probably would not hurt to check the ignition timing. That doesn't mean to correct the timing, just hook up a light and check it. If it is not tune up or fuel related, you may be looking at a stretched timing chain.
