Ford Repair: slight grinding noise from front end 2002 ford escape, cv joints, power steering hose

Question
I have a noise from the front end when the steering wheel is turned. I went to a parking lot cranked the wheel both ways and went in a tight circle and the wheel does not buck back and forth. But I still think the problem is a cv joint on one of the front axles. But before I tear it apart are there any special tools needed to replace a front axle and what would the tourque specs. be? If you think it may be something else I am open to any suggestions.

Answer
Hi Greg,
I don't think its the CV joints. We have had problems with the upper strut mounts on Escapes. Also we have had a problem with steering gear noise and there is a TSB on a power steering hose noise. I can't tell for sure unless I can hear it, but if you take it to your FORD dealer and have them diag the noise, Email me back and I can tell you how to fix it yourself.
