Ford Repair: Carburator for 83 F-150 (351 5.8L), plastic spoon, throttle arm

Question
QUESTION: I just bought a not running 83 F-150... now running VERY rough, (gets worse as warms up), probably can't pass inspection. Garage says it's the original carb; can't work on it--Says it's a really complicated and wierd model nor does he know anyone old enough to remember this carb to do competent work.  So I have two Questions: Can you comment on this wierd carb and what is the best (cheapest) solution for what will be a work truck.  I figured changing it along with intake would be best. Is that right?   Don't need it to be a super performer or most powerful, but would appreciate smooth, reliable and "best" milage  I can get from this old gas guzzler...

ANSWER: You need to stay with an OEM carburetor.Unfortunately you're OEM carburetor is around $300.You're carburetor is tied in with you're ignition system so changing it would be more trouble than it is worth.

QUESTION: I was trying to say that my mechanic claims the truck has a unique carb that he says is unique to about half the 351s made that year... he says he can't fix it... is that true?  You are saying stick with the OEM for that year... what is the OEM Carb make and model for an 83 F150 5.8L (351)...$300 is not "unfortunate" in sofar as a new-used intake and carb would run about the same or more together, right?  So if you can tell me what carb to put on that baby, (including whatever numbers and names I need to order it) and if I can get it for $300, that would be great....Thanks!

Answer
Get every number that you can off of you're carburetor. You're mechanic is correct about the rebuild possibility.Take a picture of you're carburetor and take it with you to the parts store. You will also need to tell the parts guys what kind of transmission you have.If it is the AOD then you're part number is Champion 62027 as long as it is not a Canadian truck and has a plastic spoon on the throttle arm.
