Ford Repair: 2000 Expedition frequently dies at idles, idle control valve, shade tree

Question
Our 2000 expedition frequently dies at idle, as if it runs out of gas or you turned the ignition switch off.  Runs fine otherwise.  The only thing that appears to cure it is to repeatedly rev the engine very quickly off.  Then it works fine for a while, but ultimately it begins dieing again.  I have changed the fuel filter, but that didnt help.  I am a reasonable "shade tree", but the fuel injected engines is something Ive never tackled.

Answer
You negelcted to tell me which engine you have, however both have had problems with the idle control valve sticking.

If a 5.4L, check the PCV line from the valve on the right valve cover to just below the idle control valve. This tube is prone to cracking or collapsing and can cause rough idle or stall. Have you checked for codes?
