Ford Repair: Change in gear ratio, rear gears, gas mileage

Question
I have a 2000 f-150 v6 5 speed and want to know if I change the gear ratio in it would I get better gas mileage? I don't need the pulling power that the truck has now due to it being used for transportation to and from work, about 300 miles per week. It gets around 17-18 mpg now. It seems that now the gears are so low that I usually start in 2nd gear. Thanks for the help.

Answer
Casey-

I suppose it could help, depending on what rear gears you have now.  Also it will be a lot more noticeable if you do quite a bit of highway cruising.  Don't expect a huge jump in mileage, but I'd say, depending on how drastic the ratio change is, you'd probably see an extra 2-4 mpg on average...maybe a little more.  Hope this helps.
