Ford Repair: Taurus ECU reset without special equipment?, ecu reset, rough behaviour

Question
On my '96 Taurus (3.0 OHV) the 'service engine soon' light has been on for a while now. I also had some rough behaviour, incl. stalling engine, specifically with hot engine and high outside temperature. I now replaced the EGR valve (no effect) and the EGR backpressure valve (high improvement!) and have noticed that the engine is running much smoother and does not present the 'hick-up' behaviour anymore.

Nevertheless the light is still on after a couple of hundred miles...
=> Is there any way to reset the warning light without having to buy special equipment?

Thanks

To keep this response short and sweet, I'll just do a step by step.

First, disconnect both battery cables.  Next, put the key in the ignition and turn it to the "accessory on" position (the last position before the engine would turn over).  Leave the key in that position for 20-30 minutes.  Take the key out and reconnect the battery.  This should force the computer to reset itself and reset the light.  If it doesn't, you'll like have to get a code reader that can reset lights or take it to a shop and have them do it.  Hope this helps.
