Ford Repair: 98 ford escort timing belt Tensioners, timing belt tensioners, valve problems

Question
I was told by a NAPA repair shop that the tensioners are broken and when this happens that 9 out of 10 times that means valve problems and it will need engine work.
I know that happened on older models but I thought that problem was taken care of and my husband said the same thing.
So does the guy at the shop just not know what he is talking about?

Answer
Tami-

Unfortunately, Ford has yet to build a free running engine to my knowledge.  Free running engines won't incur damage if the timing belt/chain breaks.  That being said, normally when belt/chains break, the valves stay open and the pistons continue to move which creates a possibility for damage.  Is it a certainty that they'll be damaged?  No. A good shop should take it one step at a time and assess the damage (if any) and repair as needed.  Just saying "well, the chains broke so there's valve damage" is just plain ignorant.  I'd advise you to have another shop look at it.  Don't tell them about your experience at NAPA, though...they might be inclined to just repeat the answer.  Hope this helps.
