Ford Repair: Power window failure and panel removal., switch problem, test light

Question
I have a 1996 Ford Explorer in which the driver's power window failed without warning. I am assuming that because of the sudden nature of the failure that it is with the switch or connectors but so far I can't even get the door panel removed. The window is stuck in the up position. Can you tell me how to remove the panel with the window up and what to look for in diagnosing the window failure.

Answer
Window up or down shouldn't make any difference. You should find two screws near the arm rest, and remove the inside handle cup, then pry the panel off, lift it from the rear as it wraps around the post in the front. If you have a test light or voltmeter, connect it across the window motor connector and see if it lights up in either direction. If not you may have a window switch problem, otherwise it is most likely the motor failed.
