Ford Repair: 1999 Mustang Steering Rack, tie rod ends, teflon seals

Question
I have a 1999 mustang 3.8 V6, The steering rack is leaking from the protective boot on the drivers side of the rack. Is there a seal I can replace, or do I have to replace the whole unit? Also is this something I (as a good back yard mechanic) can handle?

Thanks
Bruce

Answer
There are special tools needed to do any repair work to the rack. Replacing it is something a home mechanic should be able to do, especially on a Mustang where the rack is easily accessable. The leaking seal is in the rack, but the fluid accumulates in the boot until it leaks. If your tie rod ends are not stiff or noisey you should be able to get a "short rack" without the ends, save a little money.

Don't forget the teflon seals on the power steering hose connections! I soak them in hot water, makes them easier to install
