Ford Repair: correction, carbon dust, 1989 ford f150

Question
Dennis,
thank you for your reply, but I errored in saying the plugs were oily, they were wetfrom cranking  for 20 min after dieing, I rechecked the pile of plugs an were dry with mild carbon dust/like  nothing big, look good.

And mouse could have gone up muffler in 2 yrs it sat - but I ran it 3000 rpm for 10 min and ran smooth, it wont idle though, some smoke when I first rev but then nothing noticeable,

if the timing chain messed up all by itself- couldnt I simply adjust timing on distributor?  which way?  I never opened distributor--since it starts right up with new plugs-- isnt it doubtful thats the culprit?  I dont want to touch anything unless I have to--One- because its hard for one usable hand guy to do it, an two, Im not like you- you do it to check it out, but if I mess with things theres a chance it will add an error and confuse the problem solving.  So. which is #1cyclinder. I cant reach two front ones, if one of back 4, I can find top of stroke, butforgot how to tell gas which of 2 are the plug firing strokes.

How do I chcke the codes by myself?
I did look for blinking fix engine ligh, but didnt see it blink when key on.

I WROTE YOU.....

The local ford shops would not/ could not help me.

There can basically be only one real problem with these specific problems, I have been ordered to get rid of it-- move it.

1989 Ford F150 van with straight 6 cylinder.
Sat for 2 years but I went out and started it all winter for few minutes.

It has some fire going to plugs.,,,it wont hit / fire once.

I can put 3 or 4 new plugs and it will take off, runs rough an slow, will rev 3500-5000.

runs for 10 - 20 min then starts loosing cylinders can allmost count them dieing,

will crank fast and 1 cyl may try to go but wide open only as fast as starter cranks.

clean plugs, still not one fire.

put 3-4 new plugs and will take off for same routine all over again.

Im broke and need to sell it and pay rent.
all 15 plugs look good except gassy / slight dust of carbon butnot big enough to scrape.

put $5 gas in 3 times and 1/2 can stp cleaner, the jet fuel type.
its the 4 capt chair + rear seat van thats used to be expensive, cant just give it away, its got new radiator and good tires. really need to just get it going an sell
I have $950 in it an never drove it,had it for spare

I really believe theres only one thing to cause this, auto zone guy said put newwires then start changing all the sensors, thats more I have an more I can sell for.

PLEASE HELP

Your Answer :
Don't believe anything Autozone tells you, they are parts salesman, not mechanics.

Are you sure the engine is getting fuel?

With the age and potential mileage on this vehicle the timing chain may have slipped, causing poor compression and the types of symptoms you are describing. Or a plugged exhaust can keep the engine from running and eventually cause it to die. A code check is a good thing to do too before you start buying parts hoping to fix it.

Answer
The timing chain primarily keeps the cam in time with the crankshaft; the ditrbituor runsoff the cam, but moving the distributor will not improve a loss of compression.

#1 is the front cylinder. You can check compression on any one of them, the only thing you won't know is how many are weak. I will look up the code procedure and post it for you later.
